Shark Bites Off Hawaii Girl's Arm Witnesses Saw No Sign Of Shark HONOLULU -- A 13-year-old girl lost her arm when a shark attacked her while surfing on the north shore of Kauai, Hawaii, Friday morning. Paramedics treated surfing star Bethany Hamilton of Princeville, and took her to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where she was last reported in critical condition. Hospital officials said Hamilton lost her arm just below the shoulder. Hamilton was surfing with her best friend about a half-mile off Makua Beach on Kauai's North Shore when she was attacked. The area is known as Tunnels. Her friend's father, who was also surfing with the girls, immediately applied a tourniquet to Bethany's arm with a surf leash. Hamilton's mother credits his quick action with saving her daughter's life. Hamilton has won national surfing contests and was expected to turn professional. Her family says she is expected to recover. County spokeswoman Cyndi Ozaki said witnesses said the water was clear and there were no indications of a shark in the water. Lifeguards are warning people in the water in the area about the shark attack, Ozaki said. She said it appears that the shark was large because of the size of the bite on the girl and the surfboard.... The last news report I heard it was a 15 foot tiger shark...

That breaks my heart, someone's dreams ruined because of a damn shark.. That's why I don't want to be a marine biologists, I hate sharks so much.

im watching it on the news now, it showed the board from the huge shark bite, talking about her arm, and saying that surfing isn't safe, and surfers are more likely to get bit because they are in the water way more than anyone else really. Shes scheduled for more surgery today, and recover, and may even be able to keep on with her career.
